Sugar substitutes are a popular option for people trying to cut back on calories and manage weight. From diet sodas to low-carb desserts, artificial and natural sweeteners are widely available—but are they truly safe? And how much is too much?
There are several types of sugar substitutes. These include artificial sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose (Splenda), and saccharin, as well as natural alternatives like stevia, monk fruit, and erythritol. Most of these have been approved for use by health organizations, including the FDA, and are considered safe in moderation.
Each sweetener has an acceptable daily intake (ADI)—a maximum amount considered safe to consume each day over a lifetime. For example, the ADI for aspartame is 50 mg per kilogram of body weight. That equates to about 15-18 cans of diet soda daily for a 150-pound person—far more than most people consume.
While these sweeteners are low in or free of calories, they may have other effects. Some studies suggest they can impact gut bacteria, increase cravings for sweets, or affect blood sugar responses in sensitive individuals. However, these findings are often inconsistent or based on animal studies, so more research is needed.
If you enjoy sugar substitutes and they help you reduce your overall calorie or sugar intake without side effects, they can be part of a healthy diet. But if you find they increase cravings or cause bloating or digestive upset, you might want to limit them or choose natural options like stevia or monk fruit.
